Frequently Asked Questions

What is RainSpace™?

RainSpace™ is a liquid storage device designed for containing mass quantities of water underground or in special above ground structures. Unlike tanks and cisterns that are large, heavy, pre-assembled structures, RainSpace™ is a modular system made of small, light components that can be easily transported and quickly assembled on the site.

How much water can RainSpace™ hold?

RainSpace™ is designed to hold large quantities of water, and will be installed to fit your needs. The total volume is limited only by the space available on the lot.

What are the RainSpace™ dimensions?

There is no definite answer to this question, which is one of the most exciting aspects of RainSpace™. Since all of the RainSpace™ structural components are small and flexible, the assembled unit can take virtually any shape—it can be long and narrow, square, round, curved, or all of the above. This allows RainSpace™ to provide large amounts of water storage in places where no other solutions will work. For instance in very narrow side yards, around existing landscape or trees, and even in excavations with un-level bottoms. Also, the RainSpace™ structural core is made up of tubes that are only 4.5" across which makes it possible to store water in extremely shallow excavations with high water tables.

Where does RainSpace™ derive its strength?

The structure of RainSpace™ is created by the specially engineered tubes within its core. When assembled tightly and enclosed, these tubes become very strong and with 24 inch depths achieve H-10 or greater weight loading. This is adequate for light traffic, parking lots, and driveways.

Does RainSpace™ work in earthquake-prone areas?

Yes. Because the components are flexible, the system can move without damage to its structure or the piping connections. In addition, the interior core prevents splashing of liquids within the storage chamber, avoiding inertial interior damage.

What is RainSpace™ made of?

RainSpace™ is delivered as a complete water storage kit ready to be installed in your excavation. It is composed of an impermeable external liner and an internal core of tubes that are made of recycled, food-grade HDPE, which have been certified green by Cradle to Cradle at the Gold level.

What are some of the key benefits of RainSpace™?

RainSpace™ is easy to transport, handle, and install, and it is flexible adapting to locations of almost any size or shape—making it useful in more applications including those with highly limited access. The ease of installation and the use of simple and readily available materials makes RainSpace™ extremely affordable. The components are sustainable, providing water-conserving solutions while using highly durable, certified eco-friendly, recycled materials.

What can RainSpace™ be used for?

RainSpace™ can be used to store water for any reason. Some practical uses include: storing water on lots with low or non-producing wells; storing rainwater for landscape or other uses; providing an emergency supply of fire fighting water, re-circulating water for ponds or water features; or utilizing water storage for the dual purpose of thermal mass for heating and cooling circulation lines.

Can old pools be converted to water storage with RainSpace™?

Yes, special RainSpace™ designs can convert unwanted, high maintenance pools to useful mass water storage. This is an extremely clever and cost effective conversion since the cost is usually lower than the expense to demolish and remove the pool. In the process you eliminate the unwanted pool, gain a huge water storage system, and reclaim yard space—all without damage to the pool structure. The pool could at any time be placed back into service by simply removing the RainSpace™ system.
